Upgrade for January 2023

miMove versions 1 & 2 were game changers - the first bespoke app to capture young people’s physical activity experiences. Our goal for 2023 is to develop the app, to not only capture this insight data but to support, incentivise and motivate young people to be active and stay active. By so doing, we aim to leverage the best that tech has to offer to create meaningful behaviour change so that far more young people reap the benefits of physical activity.

In order to do this we are investing heavily in development. The first upgrades will be released at the start of January. These will include:

  1. miPoints
  2. Video upload
  3. Target setting and review function
  4. Streaks

We are running live demos at 4pm (UK time) on 3 and 9 January. To join the call, simply email us with your preferred date. If you prefer you can book a 1:1 demo using this link.

Introducing miPoints

miPoints will provide the foundation for all future developments. We are drawing upon the basics of gamification by introducing experience points (XP). Our key question was which behaviours do we want to reward? To answer this, we turned to our core mission - to support young people build a positive relationship with physical activity - hence, being physically active is the primary rewarded behaviour. Every time an activity is posted, points are allocated. We have modelled the quantity of points to benefit both frequency and duration of activity in keeping with our commitment to inclusion.

Making the World More Active
miMove 2.0 has been designed to motivate & incentivise your students to be active and stay active.

#gamechangeAs miPoints are collected, users progress through levels. As being active is the primary source of points, the higher the level the stronger the young person’s relationship with physical activity. However, miPoints are also available for:

  • Reflecting on their PA experience (using the miMove free text reflection field).
  • Posting a photo or video
  • Setting and meeting or exceeding targets

Video upload

This upgrade was widely requested by both teachers and students. As well as being able to post a photo, users can now upload a short video when recording an activity. This opens up a lot of possibilities. We know a lot of schools use the photos to create displays of students being active out of school. Videos now allow for montages to be created and shared online via school websites, in assemblies or on social media, all of which serve to celebrate your students. They also open up possibilities for teaching and learning as students can showcase their progress in their favourite activities or evidence the application of what they learn in PE in another setting. By adding video, miMove has the capacity to be a digital portfolio to evidence each student's progress over time - to demonstrate that they can do more now than they could last term or last year. This is enormously powerful for teacher and student led assessment and, perhaps more importantly as a tangible tool for building confidence and self-efficacy when it comes to ensuring every young person can identify as a physically active and educated person

Introducing Target Setting and Review

Behaviour psychology tells us that if we plan something we are far more likely to do it. But it also tells us that these plans need to have a degree of flexibility so if, for example, you plan to run for 45 minutes before work and something comes up, we need to be able to roll with that and either run for less time or later that day. In light of this, we have built a target setting function in which young people are asked to commit to the number of activity sessions they will take part in over the forthcoming week. PE lessons are not counted in the target as they are compulsory so don’t reflect a voluntary commitment to PA. (However, miPoints are still available for recording PE lessons.) A student receives 10 points for setting the target and 30 points for meeting or exceeding it. We have deliberately included low targets including zero as there may be times when this is the right option, for example, if unwell or injured or it is simply not possible to take part in usual activities.

Introducing Streaks

Students will be able to build streaks that are made up of consecutive weeks in which targets are met or exceeded.

We hope you are as excited as us to see the impact of these updates on your students' PA levels. We have lots more planned for later in the year; all updates will be explained to students via in app explainers.
